As of December 12th, 2005, the music industry has considered it illegal to provide unlicensed tablatures. However, some sites have managed to continue providing free tabs by requesting permission directly from the artists. We will attempt to locate and provide links to these free tab sites as well as sites providing tabs at a nominal cost for tabs not available for free.

- MetalTabs.com - MetalTabs.com has free tabs for thousands of songs by hundreds of bands. They took the time to contact all the bands listed on their site, and most supported what they were doing, so all the tabs on their site are completely legal.
- MXTabs.net MXTabs.net is the first legitimately licensed site designed to provide musicians with access to free tabs, while also compensating music publishers and songwriters for their intellectual property.
